Why does the microwave power not match the label on my food?

Often the microwave power suggested on ready meals does not match the power settings that are available on domestic microwave ovens.

It is a simple job to calculate a new cooking time in this instance. Divide the recommended power setting on the meal by the power that you are using on your appliance. Multiply the recommended time by that amount to give the cooking time actually required.

For example: The instructions on the packet say to cook at 650 watts for 6 minutes. Your oven only has a 600 or 900 watt setting. Choose the nearest setting under the recommended power, 600 watts in this case. 650 divided by 600 = 1.08. Multiply 6 minutes by 1.08 = 6.48 minutes which in round terms is 6 and a half minutes.

Bear in mind that cooking times are only a guide and that you may need to increase or decrease times to obtain your desired result. Combination appliances may need a slightly longer cooking time than a straight microwave.
